Wolf Sable, Orange Sable, Orange, Cream, Black, Blue Merle

A member of the Toy group and bred in Central European countries as a companion, the Pom looks more like a battery-operated toy in motion than he does a dog! A member of the Toy group and bred in Central European countries as a companion, the Pom looks more like a battery-operated toy in motion than he does a dog! This adorable, tiny fluff ball stands between 8 - 12 inches high at the shoulders (withers) and weighs between 4 - 12 pounds on average. The breed is compact, alert, and sociable.

The personality of a Pom is big and booming. Not to be the quiet wallflower, this little guy makes his presence known wherever he goes through his voice and bouncy step. He is sweet, sociable, playful, and definitely not your typical lapdog. Small enough to live in a studio apartment comfortably and well suited for litter box training, the Pom is ready for action and play, all hours of the day. Thankfully, even though he is an active breed, his tiny stature makes playtime easy to accomplish since he certainly doesn’t need space to tire him out! An excellent travel companion due to his size, the breed is ready to board the train or plane and accompany you on your next vacation. Although he is generally tolerant of children, his tiny size makes it important to supervise children not to play rough with this dainty little guy as to prevent injuries from occurring.

The coat on the Pom is thick and fluffy, with a tail that curls over his back, erect ears, and a pointy nose that makes him look foxlike. Grooming is accomplished by frequent brushing to prevent matting and to remove dead hair from the undercoat. Clipping the coat short is unnecessary and not advised as it can cause damage to the coat. Colors range wildly from solid to merles of almost any color including black, cream, orange, sable, and wolf. Shedding is minimal. Some have even claimed the Pom to be hypo-allergenic, but this cannot be confirmed. The breed typically lives 12 - 16 years.
