The Dachshund, a hound originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers underground, is a diverse breed. The Dachshund, also known as the Doxie, Hotdog, or Weiner dog, is available in two different sizes, the miniature which is under 11 pounds, and the standard which is over 11 pounds. The breed also comes in three different coat varieties, the smooth coat, the long hair, and the wirehair, which means anyone interested in the breed has the difficult task of choosing just which one is right for them. Of course, to make it simple, you could just have multiples so you can have each variety!

The Dachshund is an adorable little hound with a tail made for wagging and with a happy attitude towards life. With short legs and a long body, the breed does have some difficulty jumping or climbing steps, but his size makes it easy for his human to carry him if necessary and his sweet temperament and small stature makes him adaptable to almost any lifestyle. Small enough to live happily in an urban high-rise apartment and be litterbox trained, but certainly able to enjoy the great outdoors in a suburban or rural home. The Doxie is a great choice for those wanting an easygoing dog that is happy to be by your side while reading a book and outgoing enough to love any adventure you want to share with him. Whether it be hiking through the woods, playing fetch in the yard, going to the beach, or camping, whatever you want to do, your Dachshund will join in on the fun. The breed is also a great watchdog and will use their voice to alert you to anything amiss in their territory.

All three coat choices are easy to care for, with simple brushing sessions to remove any dead undercoat hairs, no professional grooming is required for this hardy breed. Since they are a hound and love food, along with the fact that their bodies are very long and low to the ground, proper diet and exercise is necessary to prevent obesity and related health issues. The breed comes in a large variety of colors with red, black/tan, and dapple being the most popular. Typical lifespan for this breed 12 - 16 years.
