Listed in the Toy group due to his tiny size, the breed was said to have originated in Spain as a small spaniel but refined in France where he earned his official name which literally means “butterfly” and is attributed to his beautiful ears.

Typically standing between 8 - 12 inches tall and weighing between 6 - 15 pounds, the Papillon is a quiet and dainty little dog which makes an excellent companion.

The Papillon is sweet, sweeter, and even more sweet. He is both adorable and unassuming, gentle, caring, and great with children. Contrary to his good looks which many believe makes him a lap dog, the breed is hardy, agile, and extremely intelligent. This allows the Papillon to excel in dog sports such as agility and obedience. Diverse and adaptable, the Papillon is well loved by his admirers due to his affectionate nature and eagerness to learn. Well suited for apartment or rural living, he is small enough to be litter box trained, typically quiet enough for close neighbors, and active enough to take hiking or to the beach for some outdoor fun. This breed is an excellent choice for a wide variety of lifestyles and for those looking for a fun companion breed that is adaptive.

The coat on the Papillon is soft, silky, and medium in length. He has longer feathering on the ears, legs, and tail. Grooming is simple enough by using a brush to maintain the coat, no clipping or professional grooming is required. Shedding is minimal and coloring is typically a bi or tricolor of white mixed with red, black, liver, or tan. The ears of the Papillon are extra-large and can either stand erect or be Phalene or drop-eared. It is very difficult if not impossible to know for sure whether the ears will stand erect or be drop eared until the puppy is almost full-grown. Bloodlines and genetics have a direct correlation to the ears of the individual and breeders do not guarantee ears will stand or stay dropped. The average lifespan is 12 - 17 years for this breed.
