Originally bred in England by the Reverend John Russell and used as a hunting dog. The breed is often referred to as a JRT or Jack, for short. The Jack Russel Terrier is a tough, active, hardy dog that is ready to accomplish pretty much any task you ask of him. Having a long-standing history of roles in both movies and television, the Jack has been adored by celebrities and aristocrats alike. Which includes big names such as Mariah Carey, Prince Charles, Bette Midler, Audrey Hepburn, and Paul McCartney. He stands between 8 - 14 inches tall at the shoulders (withers) and 10 - 20 pounds in weight. The Jack is a tenacious and energetic dog that excels in most activities and sports due to his incredible stamina and endurance.

The Jack makes for a very fun companion dog. He is extremely smart, adaptable, and does well in just about any climate and living situation if he is provided with both mental and physical stimulation and exercise. He loves the outdoors but would be just as happy playing fetch or learning new tricks inside on a rainy day. The Jack does well in both an urban or rural living situation and does not require a lot of space to be happy, only companionship and fun! This breed does best when paired with an active family or person that is looking for a dog to share activities with. The Jack makes for an excellent jogging or hiking partner. He is also a willing participant in flag football with the kids or swimming at the lake. This is a silly dog that loves to be in the middle of the action.

The coat on a Jack is no fuss and easy to care for. A simple quick brushing to remove any dead undercoat should do the trick. The Jack comes in two coat lengths, either a smooth coat or a rough coat which is just a tad longer and coarse, but just as easy to maintain. They do shed but it’s minimal and no professional grooming is necessary. Jacks come in any color combination but should be predominantly white with dark colored markings. His average lifespan is 12 - 16 years.
