Affectionately known as an “Iggy”, the Italian Greyhound is a sweet and quiet breed, originally bred in Italy as a lapdog or small hunting dog. The breed is listed in the toy group and rightly so, as his small stature averages only 11 - 15 inches tall at the shoulders (withers) and between 8 - 15 pounds in weight. The Iggy is a perfect match for anyone looking for an adorable and devoted dog that wants nothing more than your companionship.

The Italian Greyhound is extremely quiet, graceful, dainty, and somewhat sensitive. A calm household is best suited for this wonderful little dog. He is intelligent, inquisitive, and adaptable to both city and country living. Small enough to be litterbox trained and eager to join you on a walk through the town. The Iggy is generally gentle with children and other pets. The breed is very playful, loves to learn and does best with positive training methods and an adoring owner.

The coat of the Italian Greyhound is short and very easy to maintain with the occasional brushing to keep the coat in good condition. Shedding is very minimal. Due to his small frame and very short coat, it is important for the Iggy to be dressed appropriately for cold weather outings to prevent him from catching a chill. Coloring on the Iggy varies widely, with any solid color or color combination of colors being seen in the breed. The breed typically lives 11 - 16 years.
