Irish Setters are well known for their friendly disposition. They make wonderful family dogs that get along well with children. Though they may come off as intimidating to strangers, these dogs are not aggressive or territorial, which means they don’t make the best guard dog. They’re highly responsive to training and work well in group settings, although they can be stubborn at times, especially since they don’t mentally mature until age two.
Training and socialization for these dogs should begin early on. Irish Setters are high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily exercise, including mental stimulation. It’s also important to let them follow their prey-tracking instincts as it makes them feel like they’re fulfilling a task. They become very attached to their families and will develop separation anxiety if left alone for more than a few hours
