Havatzus love food and have a tendancy to become obese. Luckily, they’re extremely active little dogs so exercising them won’t be a problem. They require a lot of interactive playtime on top of short daily walks. They enjoy being off the leash to explore and make other friends in the dog park, just remember, without a daily exercise routine they will become hyperactive.
These little balls of energy are fairly easy to train and will pick up on commands quickly. They do have quite a stubborn streak, so you’ll have to be patient and supply them with lots of treats and verbal praise. The Shih Tzu is known to be difficult to house-train, and the Havatzu seems to have inherited this trait. Training and socialization should be consistent and begin early on.
Havatzus are very social and very curious. They get along with just about everyone they meet but they also tend to get into mischief from time to time. They do not like to be left alone for long periods of time—this is when the mischief begins. Though friendly, they will occasionally bark to alert their owners of company at the door.
