Weighing in at 80 – 160 pounds and standing 23 - 30 inches tall, the French Mastiff is a solid built dog that is serious about his job, whatever it may be. With a life of 10 - 12 years this breed was made famous by the Tom Hanks movie “Hooch” which starred a Dogue de Bordeaux as a junkyard guard dog turned police dog that stopped at nothing until he caught the bad guy who killed his owner. The film, which was a comedy portrayed the breed fairly well, as this breed is tenacious, protective, and fiercely loyal, loving his family and property.
The French Mastiff is large, thick, and wide, with wrinkles and extra skin to add to his appeal of his mushy faced adorableness. Although the movie “Hooch” showed the breed as a dog that drooled gallons and gallons of saliva, which was an exaggeration, the breed does have large jowls, which makes drooling a reality for anyone that chooses to share their home with this gorgeous breed. The Dogue is intelligent, protective, loving, and with a bit of a stubborn streak, to add to his charm. The French Mastiff is a dominant breed, he is best suited for a firm owner that will provide clear boundaries and early socialization. He will always require consistent training, to ensure a well-rounded dog of good character.
The coat of this breed is short with moderate shedding that is easily cared for with consistent brushing sessions to remove any dead hairs. The folds of wrinkles, extra skin on the face and elsewhere on the body will need to be properly cleaned and cared for regularly to prevent skin infections from developing. Colors for this breed can be Red, Fawn, or Brindle.
