If you are looking for a dog that may be as smart as you are, this may be the breed for you! In all seriousness, the BC as he is commonly referred to, is known as the smartest breed in the world. The Border Collie is capable of learning hundreds of words and excels in just about any canine sport he puts his mind to. Originally bred as a working farm dog, the Border Collie is still known as a hard-working ranch dog that takes his job very seriously. The Border Collie is categorized in the herding group and originates from Great Britain. Average Weight for the breed is 30 – 60 pounds and stands approximately 18 - 22 inches tall at the shoulders (withers).
The Border Collie is NOT the best breed choice for the average dog owner. This breed is highly intelligent, let us repeat highly intelligent, and requires a devoted owner that is capable and willing to spend quite a bit of time with their dog, providing both extensive mental and physical exercise, consistently, and without fail, and the space in which to exercise. It is commonly said that a Border Collie without a job to do will find a job and that may include many negative behaviors. Early socialization and training are necessary to ensure that the Border Collie thrives in his environment. For those that are up to face the long-term challenge of owning such an intensely intelligent companion, the Border Collie is a joyful, affectionate, and eager companion that is ready to face each and every day with gusto and ambition by your side. The Border Collie is an excellent companion and choice for the serious jogger, runner, biker, hiker, or canine sports enthusiast. He would also do well with a family in a suburban or rural setting that spends a great deal of time together enjoying outdoor activities and want a dog to share it with.
The medium coat length on the Border Collie sheds moderately and needs only regular brushing sessions to keep the coat in good condition. Colors for the Border Collie come in Black and White, Tricolor, sable and white, chocolate and white, red tri, red tan and white, lilac, red merle, and blue merle. The breed has an average life span of 10 - 15 years.
