This large working breed originated in the mountains of Japan where he was bred for guard duties, and highly revered by royalty.
Weighing in at a whopping 70 - 120 pounds and standing a tall 24 - 28 inches at the shoulders (withers), this is a courageous breed that is loyal and protective of his family and property.
The Akita is a serious dog that excels in his duties. He requires a firm owner that will set clear boundaries and provide early socialization and training to ensure a well manned pet.
As a dominant breed, he is intimidating to say the least and will not back down from protecting his loved ones. The Akita is highly intelligent and eager to please, with a slight stubborn streak that is evident when he doesn't want to be bothered with what he considers trivial matters. The breed is playful and loves outdoor activities, needing room to stretch out and play. As with other large and powerful breeds, he should be supervised around young children due to his size.
The Akita coat is thick and short. The coat is maintained by simple frequent brushing to remove the dead undercoat and the occasional bath. The Akitas shedding is moderate to heavy. The Akita comes in many colors, both solids and bicolors such as Pinto, brindle, with or without a black mask. His average lifespan is 9 - 12 years.
