The Wire Fox Terrier is a classic breed that has been around since the 1800s and greatly resembles the Smooth Fox Terrier. There aren’t many records of crossbreeds from back then, but it is believed that the Wire Fox Terrier came from crossbreeding the Smooth Fox Terrier, Bull Terrier, and the Beagle. Their original purpose as hunting dogs was to “flush out” foxes from their boroughs.
Today the Wire Fox Terrier makes an excellent companion as well as a competition dog. Fox Terriers play well with older children, but small children tend to incite their prey instincts which typically results in the dog chasing and nipping in excitement. Though they get along just fine with strangers, they do not get along well with other dogs or cats, unless they are raised together in the same home. Other smaller pets are also out of the question.
Despite their size, the Wire Fox terrier is not suitable for apartment life. They’re vigilant and alert, and need a lot of rigorous daily exercise. They do best with a securely fenced-in backyard where they can run freely. It’s also 100% necessary to keep these dogs on a leash during walks as they will chase down other animals.
These intelligent pups are also willful, making training a challenge. They require patience, consistency, and clear rules, otherwise they will lose interest. Once motivated, however, these dogs can learn just about anything. Unfortunately, they’re not suited for just any dog owner.
