Known as the German Mastiff, this extremely large German bred dog is a working breed that stands the tallest of all dogs with height averaging between 26-to over 40 inches tall at the shoulder, and can weigh between 90-180 pounds. The breeds claim to fame has come through many movie roles through the years and the beloved Scoopy Doo cartoon that featured a talking Great Dane. Due to his extreme size and some health issues prevalent and inherent in the breed, the average lifespan of this Giant breed is 6-11 years.
Commonly referred to as a Velcro dog, the Dane is sweet and loyal and needs to be with his family as this is a companion dog first and foremost. The Dane is a leaner meaning that it is common for a Dane to be touching or leaning on his owner whenever in his presence because he craves close proximity to his master. When raised properly and well socialized, the Dane is a patient dog, gentle, and eager to please his family. Not realizing his size and strength, the Dane is a goofball that has a comedic personality that thrives on positive training methods and an attentive owner.
The Dane has a short coat that is easy to care for with regular brushing and the occasional bath, and sheds minimal to moderately. Colors for this breed vary and include fawn, brindle, blue, black, merle, boston, mantle, harlequin, and fawnequin. His ears are naturally floppy or can be cropped to stand erect. This very large dog requires a family that has a large financial budget to feed and care for him properly, and in return he will provide years of devotion and love.
