Affenpinscher

This German bred dog is a toy breed commonly known as the monkey dog or mustached little devil for good reasons. The breed was originally bred to be a hunter of vermin on the farm or in the home and is tenacious and aloof. Today, the breed enjoys the status of devoted companion dog for those looking for a breed that is not needy and easy to care for with a coat that is widely considered to be hypo-allergenic and minimal shedding. With an average weight of 5-15 lbs. and standing at 8-12inches tall at the shoulders, the Affenpinscher is a great size for small spaces and excels as an apartment dog.

The Affenpinscher can be a difficult breed to housetrain due to their independent personality and tend not to do well with small children since they are not considered to be a cuddly dog, but are a devoted companion to the humans they choose to share their life with. For those that are willing to overlook the breeds shortcomings will be rewarded with an easy to care for dog that is considered to be a great choice for many allergy sufferers and for those that don’t want to vacuum up a lot of hair in their home.

The coat is harsh and wiry, and does well with either professional grooming or regular brushing sessions to maintain it. The color options are black, grey, silver, red, black and tan and beige. The breed enjoys an average lifespan of 11-15 years.

As this is a brachycephalic (short faced) breed, it is important to understand the needs of this type of breed prior to purchase to ensure that this breed suits your lifestyle and climate, and to provide proper care during hot weather or excessive activities for the health and well being of the dog.
